What Is Wood Rot & Why Does It Happen?
Wood rot is the decomposition of wood from microscopic fungi. All organic matter eventually decomposes, but fungal growth promoted by damp wood accelerates this process. In nature, this is an important process that turns fallen trees into nutrient-rich soil. When it comes to your home, however, it’s a major problem that can lead to serious safety issues.
Normally, your home is protected against wood rot by coatings and exterior materials that keep water and fungi spores away from wood. When your home is dry, it’s at a much lower risk of developing wood rot. Over time, however, these coatings and materials can break down or become less effective, which may expose wood to risks that can lead to rot. Other common causes of wood rot in homes include undetected leaking from pipes hidden between walls and high humidity.
How Do I Identify Wood Rot?
There are three common types of rot that can affect almost any home:
- Brown Rot is brown in color and can appear to be dry. This occurs because the fungi that cause brown rot target the wood’s cellulose, which gives it its structure. When cellulose is consumed, the wood will turn to a dark brown color and fracture into small bits.
- White Rot can appear to be white or light yellow, and it can feel spongey to touch. The fungi that cause white rot like eating another structural element of wood called lignin, which leaves behind light-colored cellulose material.
- Soft Rot occurs more slowly than brown or white rot, and the fungi that cause it can make affected wood look similar to a honeycomb. Although soft rot isn’t common in homes, it can persist in temperatures that are too cold or too hot for either brown or white rot fungi to endure.
Where Is My Home Most at Risk from Wood Rot?
Because wood rot occurs where water and moisture are most likely to find wood, there are a few places in your home that may be at a higher risk of wood rot than others.
Some of these areas include the following:
- Roof decking
- Outdoor decks
- Windows
- Rooms with plumbing fixtures
- Basements
- Exterior doors
Although you may be able to notice rot in these areas on your own, it’s always a good idea to have a professional assess your situation. Sometimes seemingly minor rot can be more extensive than it appears, and sometimes wood rot can go unnoticed until a serious problem occurs.
